Marriage Game Feature Graphics

Marriage Card Game is a variant of rummy card game played with three packs of cards. This game is popular in India and other South Asian countries. Three decks of cards are used to play this card trick game, and each player is dealt with 21 cards. Marriage game is considered as a tricky card game, because of its gameplay and number of cards played.

History of the Marriage card game

“Marriage” is a matching card game that is said to be evolved from an Indian card game named “Rummy” or “Paplu.” This game is really popular in Nepal, Bhutan, and India.

About this Marriage game

Marriage Game Options

Currently, there are three different versions of the game, which are kidnap, murder, and classic. Each variant is just a little different from the others. The rules are the most similar to the rummy games; the arrangement of sequences, sets, and triplets are closely similar. Apart from the similarities, what makes Marriage different is the way the joker (maal) is shown. You can only know the joker cards once you have submitted the first set of cards.

The Game modes available in this Marriage game

Murder: In this game mode, the points of the player who are still on the first rounds are not counted. The points are only counted of those players who have already completed the first round.

Kidnap: In this game mode, the player who declares the game kidnaps the cards of all the players who are still in the first round, including their maal cards. This means the points of the players, who are still in the first round, will be added to the points of the player who declared the game.

How to Play this Marriage Card Game

There are two rounds of this game which are listed below;

Marriage Gameplay

First round

Playing the Marriage Card Game is pretty simple. In the first round, you have two options: show three Sets or show seven Dublees. The option to show Dublees is only available when you are playing with four or more players. You can either show three sets/ sequence/ triplets or show seven pairs of the twin cards. The twin cards have the same face and same card value. Since the game is played with three sets of cards, the chances are high that you already have a few of the twin cards. Arranging the cards to form three Sets or seven Dublees is up to you. After you have shown your cards for the first round, you can see what the joker (Maal) card is.

Second round

The second round of the Marriage Card Game depends on what cards you showed in the first half. If you had shown seven Dublees, you only have seven cards on hand. To declare the game, you need one more Dublee card. If you had previously shown three sets, you now have 12 cards on hand. You have to arrange the cards into three Sets. There should be one pure sequence, and you can use the Joker (Maal) cards to make other Sets. The rule explaining which cards are marked as jokers are quite different in this marriage game. Once you have the four sets ready, you can declare the game.

Winning the Marriage Game

Winning the Marriage Game

The person who declares the game doesn’t necessarily win the game. The winner is based on the points of the cards. The game automatically calculates the points for each player based on the value of Maal the player holds, and the number and values of unarranged cards in hand. Calculating the points manually is pretty hard, so the beginners are intimidated by it.

What are Tiplu, Poplu, and Jhiplu?

A card is chosen at random during the game, which is called “Tiplu.”. The cards that are above or below of the same suit as tiplu are wild cards. The card that is above the tiplu is poplu, and the card that is below the tiplu is the jhiplu. E.g., if the tiplu is Q of spades, then J and K of the same suits are considered as wild cards. Here, J of spades is jhiplu, and K of spades is poplu.

Tips and Tricks to win the Marriage game:

  • You need to observe the cards discarded by the player next to you. When it’s your turn, throw the card that is useless to your opponent. This will slow down your opponent.
  • After getting the cards, the first thing you should do it to arrange them properly based on possible sequences and sets. This will help you avoid the situation of discarding any useful cards that you have on your hands. By doing this, it will be easy for you to complete the melds.
  • Try to group high-value cards or useless cards together so that you won’t be confused about which card to throw when your turn comes.
